Opening Today: Charlotte’s Web, Eragon, The Pursuit Of Happyness (with trailers)

On December 15th, 2006

Hollywood is officially running out of original stories, because all this weeks nationwide releases are literary adaptations of one type or another.

Read on for previews and trailers of Charlotte’s Web, Eragon and The Pursuit of Happyness. Or just go out and buy the books instead.

Charlotte’s Web

The “most beloved story of all time”? That’s quite a claim. If you have fond childhood memories of this E.B White tale of a pig named Wilbur saved from the chopping block by a surprisingly literate spider, be prepared to have them tarnished by Julia Roberts’ voice. Check out the rest of the cast though. Dakota Fanning is Fern, while the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Steve Buscemi, Robert Redford and many more voice the rest of the barnyard.

Eragon

Harry Potter with dragons anyone? Fans of the Christopher Paolini book will be all excited about this big screen adaptation, but to me it feels like a desperate attempt to cash in on the fantasy fever caused by Tolkein, Lewis and Rowling. And that is one poorly edited trailer, all fading in and out for no good reason. Jeremy Irons does his best to add some gravitas though.

The film my spellcheck hates. Will Smith ages a little and gets dramatic as a man chasing his dream, and prepared to briefly live in a toilet along the way. Based on the life story of Chris Gardner. Full Screenhead review here.
