The $2 Million Movie That Made Just $30
Zyzzyx Road cost approximately $2 million to make, but took just $30 at the box office. Devin Faraci over at CHUD.com first spotted this box office disaster, so we should credit him with tracking down the following information:
It was in just one theater for just one week. The lucky theater in question was the Highland Village Park Theater in Dallas ,Texas. It opened on February 25th 2006, and closed six days later.
Directed by John Penney, the unpronounceable film starred Katherine Heigl of Grey’s Anatomy fame, Tom Sizemore of Tom Sizemore fame and Leo Grillo. That last name should be a clue as Zyzzyx Road was made by Leo Grillo Productions, a company set up to produce films for Grillo to star in.
In fairness to Grillo and his movie, it seems the one week release was just Regent honoring their distribution deal in the smallest possible way. But that $30 total should ensure Zyzzyx Road becomes a minor cult classic if and when it gets a DVD release.

..rest in peace.
ummmm… this was never a theatrical release. It’s a DVD movie. I think it only played in Dallas at a special screening.
So you have to move up the list to find a theatrical release with bad numbers.
ALSO – This isn’t the trailer link (above). The real trailer from Regent can be found here:

Why on earth was Dallas, Texas picked for the release?? They should have at least picked the same state that Zyzzyx Rd. actually exists in! I doubt that it would have made the 2 million, but I am sure they would have made more than $30.00. Sounds to me lilke somebody wanted it to fail… Next time you make a movie about an obscure California exit on the way to Las Vegas, at least release the darn thing in California…
Wow that is so sad ot hear that a movie only did that well. I really hope it wasn't a terrible terrible film. At least they made some money, but still that is just sad that they spent so much. I will have to check out the trailer and see this for myself. I might just watch it too if they do have a DVD release. I am always up for terrible films and seeing if they are truly worth it or not. http://www.theaterspecialtieslv.com
