The Covenant DVD Review: I really want special powers.

On January 3rd, 2007

I’ve always wanted mystical powers. I think that high school would have been a lot more enjoyable with them.

The Covenant is set at a remote private school in Massachusetts where parents with money send their children to get the best education possible. This school is like most other private high schools you may have heard of or attended. The teachers are top-notch, the sports teams are flawless, and the kids study hard and party harder. At least this is what Sarah Wenham thought when she transferred there on a scholarship. After going to a party in the woods, she meets her roommate’s boyfriend and is introduced to one of his friends, Caleb. The closer she becomes with Caleb and his mysterious friends, the more she realizes she’s stuck in the middle of a war of witches, eighteen years in the making. Think of The Craft, but with boys.

This movie will convince you that witches and warlocks really know how to enjoy life. These boys get all the girls they want, they are the stars of the swim team, and they have a never-ending supply of money from their parents. If that wasn’t enough, they possess powers of witchcraft that can be traced back to the Salem Witch Trials. Yeah, I’m jealous, but I digress.

The Convenant is by far no Oscar winner, but it is definitely fun to watch. The CGI they used to pull off some of the ‘spells’ and the fight scenes were very well done. The scene they show in the trailers with the car exploding then coming back together is like something I’ve never scene before. My only gripe is the severe predictability of this and every other movie that involves teenagers. I have a habit of figuring out the ending of movie well before I should, and this film just fed my addiction. If you are between the ages of 10 and 35 and want to see something fun, or you just plain enjoy movies involving the occult, this movie is for you.

Very true . . . this movie was just what I needed to get me in the mood for Halloween a couple months ago. Beyond that, its pretty disposable as far as value is concerned.

The only thing I didn’t like is . . . if you are going to give someone the power to do practically anything . . . can’t you at least find a better way of displaying the power other than shooting out CGI bubbles left and right?
