Top 10 YouTube Make Your Own Grindhouse Trailers (according to me)

On February 19th, 2007

Different Grindhouse posterThe SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas are having Robert Rodriguez judge a make your own grindhouse trailer competition.

A lot of the entries are on YouTube, and some of them are damn good.

I spent a blood splattered morning trawling through more of them then was good for me, and compiled a top 10.

WARNING: These fake trailers feature lots and lots of fake sex and fake violence and some very real swear words. Just so you know.

Quick disclaimer: there are tons of these things on YouTube. I could easily have missed a great one.

ONE
[kml_flashembed movie="http://www.youtube.com/v/_mM-cUlCRc8" width="425" height="350" wmode="transparent" /]Lots of the grindhouse trailers go for the sexploitation angle, but very few feature a deranged fetishist. Foot Fiend and High School Splatter Fest Part 666 does. Plus it’s one of the few trailers that feels like a genuine grindhouse trailer, because some of the splatter is off screen and therefore semi-disturbing as opposed to silly.

TWO
[kml_flashembed movie="http://www.youtube.com/v/q0RR747gY2Q" width="425" height="350" wmode="transparent" /]I’m A Kill You Bitch is an example of what you can be achieved with no budget, smart writing and a brilliant title. Wouldn’t like to see the two prequels though.

THREE
[kml_flashembed movie="http://www.youtube.com/v/7FWY08O-Osc" width="425" height="350" wmode="transparent" /]Spring Break Sorority Sisters in Miami. Murder. Mayhem. is one of the few trailers to innovate beyond the blood and splatter. Disco!

FOUR
[kml_flashembed movie="http://www.youtube.com/v/f6rDiM5CMvA" width="425" height="350" wmode="transparent" /]
El Jardinero has that vintage ’70s feel down perfect, plus a genuinely funny idea with plenty opportunities for inventive carnage. And how about that final poncho-clad shot?

FIVE
[kml_flashembed movie="http://www.youtube.com/v/1LlazPgxKrA" width="425" height="350" wmode="transparent" /]Hobo With A Shotgun has the best title, the best logo and probably the best idea for a character. For some reason I also love the “rated R” at the end.

SIX
[kml_flashembed movie="http://www.youtube.com/v/Qtsprr-qdn0" width="425" height="350" wmode="transparent" /]Smoking Monkey makes me laugh. What can I say? It’s the crapiness of grindhouse done with crappy CGI, Hitler, comic books and King Kong.

SEVEN
[kml_flashembed movie="http://www.youtube.com/v/PXO-CpeRWX8" width="425" height="350" wmode="transparent" /]
THORR: Sexx Detective is like Shaft, only fat and white and with an oversized (euphimistic?) hammer. The risen from the dead hoes with red eyes are scary. The best grindhouse tagline ever: “They never talk back. They never tire… They work for free!”

EIGHT
[kml_flashembed movie="http://www.youtube.com/v/gTLD-wskkYk" width="425" height="350" wmode="transparent" /]The best thing about Slamdingo is that it’s short, which is a genuine compliment. Every other trailer is around two minutes – maybe more – but this is plenty grindhousey in 26 seconds and nothing but still images.

NINE
[kml_flashembed movie="http://www.youtube.com/v/93YRdNThXxk" width="425" height="350" wmode="transparent" /]Captain Dildo and his Pussycat seems to have no plot and contains plenty of unnecessary, non-sequitur sexually themed violence. So perfect for the grindhouse then. But it’s also very non-American, with the flashy blue lights, dance music and Police Municipale. It’s Euro-grindhouse!

TEN
[kml_flashembed movie="http://www.youtube.com/v/6K-Micq6npM" width="425" height="350" wmode="transparent" /]The Maiden of Death was clearly made with a decent budget, and is maybe too polished to be an actual grindhouse flick, but it’s still a great exploitation idea. Plus who can resist the phrase “symphony of exit wounds”? Not me.

A note on you NUMBER 8 PICK: SLAMDINGO.
The wrong one was posted… You are actually lookin at a rough cut. What was actually submitted to SXSW is at this link…

So, after you watch that “final” version… we may get disqualified from your list as it is essentially longer and completely different from the version you have listed here. There are no stills in this version and so on. Hopefull it’s an improved version… but i guess it’s up to you to decide. Thanks…

Hobo With A Shotgun easily beats the rest of these. I’m A Kill You Bitch is all title, and nothing else. The Maiden of Death might look slick, but at least you can see what’s happening. And the final Slamdingo trailer was pretty impressive too.

    Lorin,

You might be right about “I’m A Kill You Bitch”. It really made me laugh when I first saw it, but after another look there’s not a lot to it. In hindsight it shouldn’t be so high on the list.

Now we know why I wasn’t invited to be a judge at SXSW!

I’m going to make it my personal mission to have “Hobo with a shotgun” become a national catchphrase (basically how it was three years ago when your grandmother knew lines from Chappelle’s Show). But whenever you do say “Hobo with a shotgun”, you have to deliver it just like the voiceover dude does in the trailer.

Are other two favorites are “Adios Lobo”, which was probably the most authentic looking trailer, and “The Woman With Eyes of Glass”, which was an amazing Giallo trailer.

They are narrowly oriented to one field, sometimes two. ,
