The David O Russell vs Lily Tomlin argument on the set of I Heart Huckabees
Here’s some incredible video from the set of I Heart Huckabees, where director David O Russell and actress Lily Tomlin go at each other.
Before you click play I should warn you it features lots and lots of swearing, including Russell calling Tomlin the word you should never ever call a woman, if you want to live.

It’s worth pointing out that Russell has a reputation for on-set anger, which may or may not be calculated to benefit actor’s performances.

What a shocker. Not only was it terrible to watch, it was terrible to make as well. I like when he knocks over the lamp best. And the line about taking three years to write the script.
That was GREAT.
I love this dude now.
Im sitting here, watching the first half, getting all pissed off cause the actress is acting like a stuck up bitch, pissing and moaning about how hard sitting in a chair and acting is, and he gets a little angry, but eats it up…
and then the second part plays, and im grinning ear to ear. I love this guy.
Great find.
I think it’s awful to watch someone lose his cool — and his use of the misogynist-language is also disturbing and very bad on his part – you never call any woman that word, no matter what; it’s sexist, disrespectful and immature…The funny thing is I loved that movie and it’s one of my favorites…
I am publishing a book about Lily Tomlin. Preview chapters will appears on my website evielitwok.com. Video will appear on my youtube iste- dogentertainment. These will be candid and accurate portrayals and will not be yanked by Lily.
That guy is a pu**y coward to physically threaten and try to intimidate a 60 something year old woman.
Boons loves Wendell: I agree. I would love to have seen him direct his anger at Mark Wahlberg or Ice Cube in Three Kings. Yeah, that would make a great YouTube video.
I’m sorry, but they both look like assholes to me.
This is abusive behavior and they both appear to be out of line. However, I am disturbed by the comments saying that she is a bitch who had it coming. It’s just another sign of misogyny that is alive and well in our world. I belive it is well documented that David O. Russell is a difficult director but it is clear that he and Lily bring out the worst in each other. These clips show that the two of them have little disregard for others on the set and have no trouble throwing tantrums. It is a bizarre, amusing, and disturbing spectacle. It is apparent to me that abusive and dysfunctional families are not limited to those that come from the home. There are just some ground rules that should not be broken (abusive language and behavior) and no amount of anger or frustration is a good excuse for adults to behave this way.
I for one, am very deeply hurt and disturbed that some people here are more concerned about political correctness then seeing someone get their come uppance.
Oh well.
CUNTS!
No one is upset at the thought of director Russell getting his comeuppane. He’s a bully that physically threatens older women!
bitch is a word. anyone can use it and then deal with the consequences (which may be bad). but anyone who says that it is ipso facto misogynistic to use the word is another pc imbecile. we should “never use the word”? what other words should we never use, ma’am?!
I want to stick my foot in his ass for talking to Ms. Frizzle that way. CUNT is just a word- you silly nitwits are making a big deal out of a silly little word… cunt cunt cunt-
What’s funny is how cool Lily Tomlin remains during the blowup.. and how the crew casually walk off set, like “oh, another argument, lunch break!” But to be honest she seems like a pretty difficult person to work with – he was giving simple direction and lets face it, he IS the director. If your whole movie was being held up by one pain-in-the-ass actor, I’m sure you wouldn’t be all politically correct for long.
i just feel bad for the rest of the cast and crew. they had to hear that for however many odd months they were shooting. ugh. what a nightmare. and pooor jason! in that scene you could tell he was extremely annoyed.
I get a little pissed off with the people who make excuses for his behavior, and also with the actors who later “forgive” him.
Am I the only one who noticed the crew member crouching by the door when he through stuff all over the room, some of it hitting her? Am I the only one who noticed the shaky way she got to her feet and tried to find a way out of there?
Its not just the actors who are victims of that treatment. They are just the only ones who get any recognition for his attacks. What about the crew members who cant afford to lose their jobs; who dont have big paychecks; who dont have big names which guarantee them more work?
If he is that bad with the actors, just how bad do you think it is for a low payed crew member who has no choice but to take that abuse day after day?
That sort of tantrum is not a one-off event, and having grown up with a father who went into fits of rage over pretty much everything, let me tell you its not fun. It goes on long enough, and it can drive you to places you really should not go.
