Overrated: Lost In Translation

I am about as big of fan as Bill Murray as there is and I think Scarlett Johansson is a great actress who is extraordinarily hot. So what don’t I like about this movie? Its SO DAMN BORING! After seeing the movie the day it came out, I truly believed it sucked despite the critical acclaim it received (it has a 95% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes). After hearing people continue to gush about the film, I made the mistake of renting it, thinking I might have missed something. I didn’t. It was still a boring film that plodded along.
The weird thing about the movie is that I think the leads played their parts very well. Johansson and Murray both had a great chemistry between them but the plot really stunk. Winning the Oscar for ‘Best Screenplay’ still shocks me to this day. To the best of knowledge, I don’t think ‘Best Screenplay’ should be given to something that will bore you to tears.

I agree, Frank, although I think you should go into more detail than it being just boring. My problem with the film is that it attempts to be so aloof of meaning that people see that as being profound. IT isn’t, it’s just very broad and very basic, and as a friend once said to me, it’s so broad that people end up projecting their own lives into the film, rather than the film projecting any interesting thoughts and ideas into their minds. It’s like looking at a blank page and imagining pretty pictures on it.
I also don’t like that it takes cheap shots at Japanese culture in order to keep the audience awak with a few laughs. I’ve been to Japan, and I assure you that shower heads are not that low. Sure, some Japanese are either reserved or crazy, but I cam e across plenty of great people too. But that’s onyl a minor flaw compared to the whopping great nothing that this film is.
I’m 17, i love action movies, cop movies, fast & furious and stuff like that, Clockwork Orange.
And i did not find this movie boring at all, i saw it for the 1st time when i was like 12, 13, i thought it was boring shit.
Then i saw it again, because of the awesome soundtrack, and is one of my favourite movies ever, i even bought it.
You just dont know how to appreciate art.
This movie is about as deep as saying “the only thing I’m sure if is that everything is unsure.”
Why do people always end with "You just dont know how to appreciate art." Not all art is great. Movies are considered an artform with that logic every movie should be considered great if one were to "truly appreciate art." Well there is a lot of crappy art out there and this is one of them. I can take a crap in a bag and leave it on your front door and call it art, would you appreciate it? If you don't then you obviously dont know how to appreciate art!
I've watched this movie 3 times and all 3 times I was bored to death..oh look sheltered American is in a foreign land with foreign culture and is having trouble in her new surroundings, oh wait..someone else has the same issue..lets talk about random stuff to remove ourselves from this crappy land. That is art ladies and gentlemen!
Bill and Scarlet played their roles great but I dont see what the hooblah was about…the director told told both em to act like "they are bored" the entire movie..just like the audience. I want to like this movie, I really do..but it is so boring and pretentious.
Oh yeah, this is what Bill whispered in Scarlets ear at the end. "There are going to be a lot of idiots who think this is the greatest movie in the world. In reality, Even I wouldn't watch this movie."
