Can Hollywood Think of Anything New Anymore?

I went to see Spiderman 3 today. The trailers featured ‘Shrek 3′, ‘Harry Potter 5′, ‘Pirates of the Carribean 3′, and (wow) a new movie ‘Across the Universe’. Is Hollywood getting lazy? Sure, the sequels are all big name franchises and earn an absurd amount of money. But won’t the American viewing audience start to tire of the same old characters on the screen? Even “Across the Universe” has been done before with the NBC mini series ‘The 60′s (although Across the Universe does look excellent-this coming from a self confessed Beatles freak).
Honestly, I will probably be going to 2/3 of the sequels. I will skip the latest installment of ‘Shrek’ but will most likely watch it on DVD. ‘Harry Potter’ always seems to deliver the goods but I thought Pirates 2 was flat out poor (I am a sucker though and will see part 3 the first weekend).
I just wish that Hollywood would lay off on the sequels. I think think it is flat out lazy to produce the same movies over and over again. If ‘Gone With the Wind’ had been made now how many would have they made? We would probably know the whole O’Hara family tree.
Although I can complain, I guess I am part of the problem by going to the said movies. I just wish Hollywood would think of something original from time to time to keep it interesting.

I agree Frank all you see these days is the same old movie stars its time for some new stars to appear.
I see fewer mainstream films in theaters because I usually feel disappointed. Marketing has become more important than filmmaking skills. The talk about “Spiderman” sequels strikes me as absurd because the films have gotten so expensive that the can barely break even based on the traditional formula that a film needs to earn two to three times its negative cost (the actually cost of production). One thing to note is that Japanese films have often had remakes and series as part of their tradition – but the big difference is that the films were made with responsible budgets. The current Hollywood trend of a new, super expensive would be blockbuster seemingly every week has discouraged interesting filmmaking both in content and style.
I have stopped going to the movies~ well, maybe once or twice a year. I love movies, I just happen to like movies for adults.
