Will ‘Ripley’s Believe It or Not’ Save Jim Carrey’s Career?

Jim Carrey was on top of the world last decade. Hits in movies such as Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb & Dumber made him the #1 comedy star of the mid to late 90′s. It all kind of disintegrated for Carrey. I am not saying he made bad movies, but take a look at a film like ‘Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events’. The ultra-popular book title was suppose to rival the ‘Harry Potter’ series but it kind of faded to oblivion. I thought the movie was excellent but it failed to live up the extreme hype that surrounded it.
Carrey really hasn’t been in a major blockbuster since ‘Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events’. ‘The Number 23′ was a moderate success at the box office, but got panned beyond belief by the nation’s critics.
I remember reading a Wall Street Journal article a few years back where film studio Twentieth Century Fox scrapped ‘Used Guys’ after blowing tons of money pre-production. That was hardly a ringing endorsement on the bankability of the former superstar.
That brings us to today where it is widely speculated, although not yet confirmed, thatCarrey will play in Tim Burtons’ ‘Ripley’s Believe It or Not’ as Robert Ripley in the starring role. Will this be the film that brings Carrey back as a household name, or will it be the final dagger to a once dazzling career? The movie isn’t due out until 2009, but it will be
an interesting story to watch develop.

No mention of ‘Eternal Sunshine’? Granted it wasn’t a ‘blockbuster’ but I loved that movie and Carrey was great. In fact I might give that one another spin tonight.
It was a great movie. Again, I said it wasn’t the quality of the movies I questioned it was more in his ability to draw in a crowd. I remember I was eagerly awaiting ‘Eternal Sunshine’ and was a bit disappointed after seeing it (due to heavy expectations) but in hindsight it was truly a great film.
