Looking as good if not better than in its 1958 release, the cult classic Attack of the 50 Foot Woman is now available on DVD from Warner Brothers. For those not familiar with the film, it’s about a woman whose been touch by a giant from outer space. After proving to everyone that she’s not crazy, she grows and grows, until she stomps into the small town where she gets her revenge on her two-timing husband and his floozy girlfriend.

The special effects certainly betray the low budget afforded director Nathan Juran, billed as Nathan Hertz on this film. Juran actually was an Academy Award winning Art Director before becoming a director, and the film is beautifully photographed, especially in a scene inside the giant’s spaceship. The highlight of the DVD is the commentary by co-star Yvette Vickers with film historian Tom Weaver. Vickers, who will be 71 next month, was a Playboy Playmate. On the DVD commentary she not only shares behind the scenes information on the making of this film but shows her incredible sense of humor, laughing while telling her stories.

The gorgeous Allison Hayes is seen giant size only in about the last ten minutes of the film. As fun as it is, one wishes that the producers could have had the money to duplicate the scene in the poster. Of course every time I look at those little men in their tiny cars I ask myself if any of those guys would take the chance to look up the fifty foot woman’s tiny skirt?
