Is Remaking Bruce Lee A Good Idea?
Warner Bros. seems to think so, posing a film called Awaken The Dragon, apparently a remake of the Bruce Lee classic, Enter The Dragon.
The film will be written and directed by Kurt Sutter, a producer on the The Shield who is attached to help write the next Punisher flick, Welcome Back, Frank.
The original had a secret agent – Bruce Lee – travelling to an island to fight a villain in a martial arts tournament. The remake follows roughly the same lines – of an FBI agent investigating a Shaolin monk and underground Kung Fu fight clubs.
The really great thing about Enter The Dragon – aside from Bruce Lee kicking a lot of ass – was the way the film could follow its characters without getting too bogged down in the story. The set-up was detailed enough to detail the motivations of the characters, but sparse enough to stay out of the way.
I worry – in addition to the perplexing question of just plain replacing Bruce Lee – that the remake may already be getting bogged down by the specifics of its plot. Nailing the kung fu atmosphere of Bruce Lee’s films may be difficult enough – but reflecting the kung fu master himself may be the hardest of them all.

Ahhh, I’m gonna go with “no”. Remakes just prove that the major studios have completely lost touch with creativity.
Still, at least they aren’t re0using the original name. Frankly, “undercover agent at a corrupt kung fu tournament” is a pretty generic plot. They may just be calling it a remake for the publicity. Or maybe no competent martial artist wanted to step into Bruce Lee’s shoes and so they couldn’t re-make the movie.

Haven’t they already done this? Has anyone noticed the simularities of Enter the Dragon and Mortal Kombat?
