Brad Pitt and Mark Wahlberg teams up in “The Fighter”

September 23rd, 2007 in Action, Actors, Drama, Movie News, Movies -

Brad Pitt is set to star along with Mark Wahlberg in Paramount Pictures new film, “The Fighter.” The film about a Boston boxer “Irish” Mickey Ward and his unlikely path to become world lightweight champion is to be directed by Darren Aronofsky.

Wahlberg is set to play Ward while Pitt is in talks to play Dicky Eklund, Mickey’s half-brother and a talented fighter who once knocked Sugar Ray Leonard to the canvas and went the distance in a title fight against that boxing legend.

Pitt will replace Matt Damon, who had been looking forward to a reteam with Wahlberg, his co-star in “The Departed” and a fellow Bostonian. Damon just had too many projects on his dance card to make the film on the schedule Par wanted.

It’s believed Damon gave his blessing to Pitt, his co-star in the “Ocean’s Eleven” film series.

Wahlberg has been vigorously training to get into shape for the ring. Paramount is aiming to get the film into production in fall 2008.

It wasn’t Boston or Southie it was Lowell. Birth of the American Industry, Mill Town, generations of hard times where the poor kids could be a criminal, a cop, or a boxer, or a laborer. West End Gym was where the cops told the kids they could make something out of their lives. Bashing each other heads in hoping to make a few bucks then blow it in a barroom. You didn’t get offered much back then if you were a poor kid. Then you had the Cosmopolitan Bar where Mickey and his brother had to mix it up with Lowell’s finest and they held him down and smashed every bone in his hand with their cop flashlights putting him out of business for three years. Then you had the mob and Jackie McDermott another golden gloves champion who made good. Main man in the Valley until Whitey Bulger machine gunned Winter Hill in Someville and took over Lowell’s action. Then McDermott was set up by Whitey and shot. Mickey did OK, and that was damn hard to do in Lowell back then.
In loving memory of the old days and McCullough’s Pub where the drinks came with food(those little bugs in the bottom of your glass) and the women would dance naked on the bar.

—Long rich —and almost 50! Brad Pitt continues
to bore with his safe ‘daring’ choices of roles
    and projects.

—This sounds like another one for the couch
    pigs and circle-jerks -i.e. Pitt’s ‘fan base’.
