50% of Screens to Be Digital by 2013

On November 12th, 2007

By 2013, half of all the world’s screens are expected to be digital.  In the past year, there has already been an explosion in the number of screens going digital, with 4,627 (5% of the global total) having converted this year through September.

U.S. theaters seem to be making the switch more readily, and are home to 78% of the world’s digital screens.  The U.K. and South Korea have the second and third most digital screens.  Luxembourg and Belgium have seen aggressive conversion, with nearly half both small markets digital.

It is believed that an upcoming onslaught of high-profile 3-D releases will only increase the world’s appetite for digital conversion.

The report was issued by cinema analysts at Dodona Research.
