New Yorker’s Take on ‘Hancock’

Hancock opens July 2nd, and I have a hunch that it’ll rock at the box office because of the reviews I’ve read this past week are totally jumping.
One awesome review by David Denby in The New Yorker was sent to me this morning. Wow! Hancock sounds like a whole new superhero movie that we’ve been needing to see. Peter Berg directs this film and takes a whole new approach to the superhero strut, pounce and win the sexy girl.
Denby’sreview sees the movie as more than a superhero movie but a lesson to be learned. Berg brings an emotional connection with the audience; let our juices boil, steam and overflow.

I’ve been reading a lot of reviews that call it mediocre to bad. Doesn’t surprise me – I wasn’t impressed by the first trailer, or any of the subsequent news.
Denby’s take on Hancock is the different approach to the superhero genre. PR expert named Ray, Jason Bateman, wants to change Hancock’s image as a favor because he saved his life. Yet, Ray’s wife played by Charlize Theron is Hancock’s love interest. This is not your normal superhero movie.
While the idea of Hancock sounds great… superhero is bored and becomes a drunk… its rating at Rotten Tomatoes is 30%, which is very, very bad. I wonder is the New Yorker praising it for its idea, while everyone else is criticising it for its execution. Either way it’s still going to storm the box office.
I am sure it will storm the box office — Will Smith has a fan base.
He was the only reason I watched I am Legend, and he was the only thing I liked about it (well, the dog too)
Will Smith was very good in I am Legend. The rest was typical even the dog.
