Various sites are reporting of a rumor that Summit Entertainment, who will be releasing a movie based on the New York Times best-selling novel Twilight later this year, has also optioned the movie rights to the second novel in the series New Moon, with plans to adapt it for release in December 2009.

STYD notes that it confirms that film producer Wyck Godfrey said before: the script for the sequel is a ‘go’. However, as with Hollywood, everything depends upon the box office success of the first film.

Twilight tells the story of a high-school girl in love with a young vampire who hasn’t aged in 90 years.
