First Showing reports that Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (Dracula Year Zero, Cobalt 60) have been hired by Sony to write the script for the new film version of Flash Gordon.

A sci-fi classic based on the comic series, the story is focused on the titular polo player who is kidnapped and taken to the distant planet Mongo where he and his companions go on a series of adventures fighting a ruler named Ming the Merciless.

The movie has Breck Eisner (Sahara) attached to direct, with Neal Moritz producing.
