Variety reports that Juan Antonio Bayona is going to direct Hater for Universal Pictures. The film will be based on British author David’s Moody’s thriller novel, which tells the story of an epidemic of violence committed by ordinary people.

The Orphanage director will shoot the film in Michigan, unlike the novel which is set in another country. However, the interior shots are being hoped to be shot in Spain.

Glen Mazzara has scripted the adaptation, which is being produced by Mark Johnson and Guillermo del Toro.
