Schrader Goes Bollywood

November 25th, 2008 in Action, Adventure, Screenwriting, The Movie Biz -

Paul Schrader who is known for classic scripts as Taxi Driver and Raging Bull is moving to Bollywood to write and direct an action movie called Extreme City.

The Hollywood Reporter extensive article gives details to Schrader’s reasoning on taking his talents to India. Apparently, he feels that the U.S film market has become “barren.”

He was quoted as saying, “I’ve been getting indie movies made for 20 years,” he said. “But I take a good look around and what I see is a barren, barren place — in terms of the financial community, in terms of audiences, in terms of distribution. It’s cold out there.”

Schrader feels India is the place to make movies where he can have both creative freedom and audiences.

City is a story about an American man who travels to India to help settle a kidnapping case for his father-in-law, but then gets caught up in a gangster plot. The story is definitely a cross-cultural tale.

Schrader is working on the script and plans to include musical numbers and dialogue spoken in English and Hindi.

With other filmmakers also collaborating with India, Schrader might have a valid point of working in India. Danny Bole’s romantic-action story, Slumdog Millionaire, is set in India.  Will Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment has a two-picture deal with an Indian entertainment company.

Needless to say, DreamWorks is financed by India-based Reliance Big Entertainment.
