Capitalizing on the upcoming release of the Star Trek reboot film, Paramount Pictures has teamed up with IDW Publishing to publish a four-issue limited comic book series.

The first in the series is dubbed Star Trek: Countdown #1 and will be released in January 2009. The story is presented by Abrams himself and is plotted by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. It has been written by Mike Johnson and Tim Jones and features art from David Messina.

"’Star Trek: Countdown’ lays the groundwork for what happens in the movie," said Roberto Orci. "It’s our way of passing the baton from the ‘Next Generation’ characters and their movies to the new film.”

The film is due out May 2009.
