The trades are reporting that Gossip Girl and The O.C. creator Josh Schwartz is in negotiations to write an X-Men spinoff focusing on younger mutants, aka X-Men: First Class.

The movie will likely focus on Xavier’s first class, showing a younger set of mutants than the first trilogy. It is not known if teenage versions of Cyclops and the gang will be shown or completely new characters will be introduced.

Producer Lauren Shuler Donner and X-Men 3 scribe Simon Kingberg are also involved. Schwartz also has the option to direct, but is yet to decide.
