‘Bang Bang Club’ Casting Set

On March 9th, 2009

Riding the excitement of Watchmen‘s opening weekend, star Malin Akerman has joined Ryan Phillippe to star in independent drama The Bang Bang Club, a story during the apartheid-era South Africa.

South African documentarian Steven Silver wrote the script based on a memoir by Greg Marinovich and Joao Silva and will direct.

Akerman will play a photo editor of the so-called Bang Bang Club, four combat war photographers — Marinovich (Phillippe), Kevin Carter (Taylor Kitsch), Ken Oosterbroek and Silva — whose photographs captured the final bloody days of white rule in South Africa.

Shooting is set to start next month in and around Johannesburg.

I saw The Bang Bang Club in preview in Toronto. The acting captured the documentary feel of these historical events. Much of that feel is due to superb direction as well as vivid cinematography. I saw the Hurt Locker a few weeks earlier. I would rate my recent viewing experience as the more riveting of the two.
