Casino Night Review: Noir Animation With A Funny Twist
You might be amazed to know–I certainly was–that Newgrounds actually has a noir section. For those of you not familiar with the term “noir”, it’s actually French for “black” and refers to a genre of film that’s a bit darker and grittier than the ordinary, and is often shot in black and white. Sin City, for example, is a good example of noir, as is much of Humphrey Bogart’s career.
So I decided to take a look on Noir’s front page to discover Casino Night, a little movie about a night on the town, and how fast fortunes can be won and lost.
Okay, this probably doesn’t REALLY qualify as noir so much as it does almost a noir parody. It’s definitely done in the noir style, but the storyline is anything but. When you watch it, you’ll likely be reminded of the Brendon Small Adult Swim show Home Movies. The art style is definitely similar, and this is the exact kind of movie the kids might well shoot.
But one thing’s clear enough–it’s as fun as it is fast to watch. It’ll keep your attention, and in this era of supersaturation of online film, that can never be a bad thing.
