Peter Horton (The Shield, Grey’s Anatomy) will write and direct an adaptation of Michael Shnayerson’s novel “Coal River” for United Artists.

The story centers on a legal battle between environmentalists and the coal industry among Appalachian communities in West Virginia.

Writer-director Paul Haggis will produce.
