Albino Farm Movie Review–Don’t. Mock. The Rednecks.

August 12th, 2009 in DVD, Horror, Movies, Reviews, Screenwriting, Suspense, Thriller -

All right, folks, we got ANOTHER advance look at some sweet, sweet direct to video horror for you from the folks out at MTI called Albino Farm.  Albino Farm will hit video store shelves September 22.

Deep in the Ozark Mountains lies the town of Shiloh, a place seemingly untouched by the passage of time.  They don’t like strangers in Shiloh, so when a group of college kids stumbles over the town while investigating the legend of the Albino Farm, they run into a whole lot more trouble than they ever saw coming.

One of the grandest rules of horror filmmaking, alongside “never say I’ll be right back” and “don’t have sex” and of course “your cell phone doesn’t work” is “don’t insult the rednecks”.  Seriously, if you’re ever out in the middle of nowhere and your car stops working for some reason, don’t insult the locals.  Just be nice.  It might save your life.

Perhaps all the more interesting is that, perhaps taking a cue from fellow wrestler Kane in See No Evil, Chris Jericho’s going to show up in Albino Farm.  I’m not sure why he bothered, but there he is.

The really baffling part about this one is that they’re going to walk, almost gleefully, through EVERY cliche in the book.  Or more specifically, thorugh every contraindicated cliche.  Don’t mock the rednecks, don’t get in a car with strangers, don’t go into places old locals warn you not to go, so on and so forth.  It’s like a rogue’s gallery of Things You Don’t Do In Horror Movies.

And yet, it’s almost because of that that Albino Farm actually turns out to be a little entertaining.  Yes, it’s low budget, but it’s the kind of low budget that it used to be.  There’s not a whole lot of torture going on here, just some really creepy goings on punctuated by an occasional murder or chase.  Almost…old fashioned, in its way.

Thus, the Screenhead Ten Scale gives Albino Farm a six out of ten for being a somewhat predictable but still somewhat welcome blast from the past.
