There Are Monsters Online Review–Creepy Cool

August 5th, 2009 in Horror, Movies, Reviews -

For a creepy cool ten minutes of short online horror video, head on over to YouTube for a round of There Are Monsters.

It’s a fairly normal day in a small Canadian town, but lurking beneath the surface of all that normalcy is something downright horrible.  Just what, no one’s sure…but something seems…a little…off.  At least until one of the neighborhood tykes attacks a woman in her house and the local convenience store is covered in blood.

You have to love this movie for almost aggressively portraying normalcy throughout, but gradually and steadily allowing the threads of that normalcy to unravel.  There Are Monsters has this excellent sort of “creeping dread” quality to it in which the world gradually falls apart.  Little by little, we discover not only that there are monsters, but there are plenty of them, and they don’t like us much.  It takes our perception of the world, that actual monsters are both few and far between, and upends it, forcing us to confront a horrible new normalcy, in which, There Are Monsters.

The Screenhead Ten Scale, meanwhile, recognizes this monstrous hit with a nine out of ten for being quick, punchy, available to pretty much everybody, even the dialup set, and understanding the value of gradual horror.
