Surface Online Review–Better Than Some, Worse Than Others
A little more of the Halloween Horror Nights short film contest for you today, folks, and today we’re taking a run at short film Surface. It’s been a real mixed bag so far, so let’s see how this one turns out!
In this one, a disgruntled girlfriend’s dreams turn out to be just a little too real for her own good.
This one’s really rather strange. It works on some levels and fails on others–it’s not so much scary as it is disquieting. It makes you think about things like your place in the universe, and that’s really better suited to bad arthouse film than a short horror flick. But at least this time I had an idea of where they were going and at least some idea of what was going on, which is frankly a rarity in the Halloween Horror Nights lineup.
The Screenhead Ten Scale hands Surface a five out of ten for trying and failing but only on a few levels. This really isn’t terrible, but there’s vastly better out there.
