Dear John — Movie Trailer

On October 16th, 2009

I found the movie for the perfect date on Valentine’s Day.  Dear John, it’s a tear jerker from Nicolas Sparks novel of the same title and directed by Oscar nominated Swedish filmmaker Lasse Hallström, My Life as a Dog, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, The Cider House Rules and Chocolat.

Channing Tatum stars with Amanda Seyfried about a couple who fall in love.  Yet, Tatum’s character is in the Army and is consistently deployed away from the woman he loves. For seven years they are constantly apart only to stay in touch through a stream of love letters — typical Sparks romance.

I like Tatumin this trailer and Seyfried is brilliant as ever.  The movie opens in February 2010, just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Cut corners on all military scenes. He had his rank on backwards on blouse for half of scene late in the movie. Combat uniforms and gear not correct for period. This might not make much of a difference to casual viewers but since his military time is key to the story, this should have been a no brainer to get it correct. The ending is terrible.

To Dick, who wrote about the mis-represented uniforms:
I just thought you should know that in movies shown to the public, official Military uniforms (of any branch) cannot be depicted, which is why, in the case of Dear John, rank was on upside down and name/U.S. Army tapes were switched, etc.
It probably had nothing to do with ignorance on part of the wardrobe crew; they were most likely just following the rules so as not to get in trouble.

To Anna, I’m sorry but Dick was correct and you were misinformed. I being in the military can proudly tell you that official uniforms from any branch can be depicted EXACTLY in a movie as long as it doesn’t compromise anything classified as secret or higher; his class A’s hardly qualify as such. The rank was upside down in that whole scene but was then was magically fixed after they cleaned off the wine from his unifomr in the bathroom. Please don’t make up things for you which you have no expertise with. Wherever you heard that policy you mentioned is pure rubbish.

As for the movie, real quickly, it’s a decent story, not as deep or unique as the Notebook in my opinion. They had a quick montage of them doing things together that would make them fall in love but it still felt a little underdeveloped where I didn’t feel they had a deep love for each other. Others may think differently but that’s just my take.

I was on the other side of that story. As a military wife I waited. I was proud and honored to wait. When my husband returned, he returned to another woman. Either way it’s heartbreaking, either way lives are destroyed.

To Illusion: I commend you for your sacrifices and AMEN TO WHAT YOU SAID BRO! Too many people get lost in the whole “ooo’s and ahhs” of a love story to see the reality here — and I couldn’t have said it better myself. And I also commend you for being blunt but not rude and for telling it how it is without being disrespectful, especially for such a personal topic as this.

Wake up America, everybody wants peace but sometimes that comes at a price when the other side won’t be bargained with. Sometimes there has to be bloodshed to do what is right and protect what others have died to give us. I relish my freedom, but if push came to shove and I had to leave my family in order to save them, I’d cry my arse off while picking up my gun and lacing up the boots and praying to God to give us victory quickly. While I wanted to see this movie and love a good romance, its just too obvious it isn’t going to end well, and I don’t need another tragedy for entertainment. We’ll be skipping this one and instead praising our men and women who CHOOSE to VOLUNTEER to protect not only us but those who cannot defend themselves, and to set at liberty those who are captive to tyranny and enslavement, having less than basic human rights. I thank God I was blessed to be born in this country and that members of my family, personal friends and so many I don’t even know have sacrificed their lives for ME. I don’t take that lightly — WAKE UP AMERICA and get out of the pipe dream while we still have a shred of country left to fight for.

I loved the book from beginning to the end. It was one of the best Nicholas Sparks books that I have read. I can’t wait until the movie comes out on DVD…
