Avatar Sequel Likely–Where Can It Go?

avatar-creatureIt’s not surprising that, given the NINE FIGURE OPENING WEEKEND Avatar had, there’s already talk of a sequel.  And already, folks like me are starting to wonder, yeah, but what do you do with it?

Well, thankfully, folks like me already have some ideas and are willing to hand them out like candy so maybe James Cameron et al can get a little more plausibility into the script.

1. Capitalists are not evil.  I’m sorry, no.  Let’s bear in mind that, for every monstrous Ken Lay and Dennis Kozlowski out there, there’s a hundred small businessmen pulling down less than a quarter million a year and giving away a goodish chunk of it in salaries and community works.

2. You’re in a bad corner.  Look, let’s face it–the Earth’s demand for unobtainium didn’t go away because the tree people sent them home.  Earth forces were woefully undermanned but still managed to kick ass on a grand scale.  Pandoran forces assembled most of the planet’s warriors.  Earth forces had like fifty gunships, tops, and they STILL almost won.  They were jury rigging shuttles for bombing runs.  What happens to the cave dwellers if Earth comes back with an ACTUAL bomber…or twenty?

3. You’re going to have to work around Earth’s knowledge.  They KNOW about the Tree of Souls now.  If Colonel Quaritch hadn’t been dicking around back at Hometree and gone straight for the throat the Na’vi would have lost.  Thus, this particular canon point is either going to have to be worked around or worked with.  And it’s a pretty big problem.  All Earth needs to win now is superior numbers or superior firepower correctly targeted.  How do you beat this?

From a narrative perspective, Avatar 2 is going to be one tough row to hoe.

superior numbers and firepower. don’t know about the year 2100+ but I do know now it costs like 10k in resources per lb weight to even get it to space. that’ll hamper reinforcements from a money=god race.

then there is distance I mean you don’t actually have reinforcements for like how ever many decades it takes to get where you going so…yeah. I’d rather the sequel cut most humans out of this and make it almost entirely based on the planet. then on your third you can have your big encounter with the wiser more desperate humans as resources are tapped out on earth or something.

I remember at the beginning of the movie it was mentioned that they had been in cryosleep for 5 years, so that would give a little time before the next wave of humans to arrive.
