Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon Movie Review–Blu Ray Crop Gets Better

December 8th, 2009 in Comedy, Documentary, DVD, Horror, Movies, Reviews -

behind the maskNow this is a slice of fried awesome that I’m all too eager to tell you about.  it just came out on Blu-ray literally today, and it’s called Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon.

Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon poses an interesting question–what if the serial killers we all know and in some cases love are real?  Not just the Gacys and the Bundys, but the Kruegers and Voorheeses and Myerses.  And in this case, we join up with Leslie Vernon as he seeks to become one of these legendary maniacs.

The first half of the movie is a documentary, plain and simple, as a camera crew follows Vernon around as he prepares to become a legendary serial killer.  The second half is a full-out horror movie, for reasons I won’t get into and spoiler here.

If you have even the slightest love for horror flicks at all, then you must, literally MUST, see this movie.  It’s an excellent example of a horror-comedy hybrid, with plenty of funny bits scattered in around the scares.  For instance, did you ever wonder how it seems like these killers manages to keep up with their target even though they do little more than walk?  Answer?  Just like in Zombieland, intense cardio!  Turns out that these killers are just really athletic.  And more than one are the beneficiaries of careful planning, as you’ll see throughout the film.

What’s great about this one is that both parts of it are so believable.  The documentary watches like an ACTUAL DOCUMENTARY in this world of  slightly unusual rules.  The horror movie is perfectly scary.

Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon is a wild, scary romp with all sorts of fun lurking inside it.  It’s  a laugh riot and a hair raiser to boot, and the Screenhead Ten Scale can do little less than, shockingly, hand it another ten out of ten.
