Quentin Tarantino’s Next Movie: Slavery Packed Western?

On February 16th, 2010

tarantinowesternAnd it’s back to the seventies for Quentin Tarantino, as he plans to go boldly charging into the era of Westerns.

Though give him due credit, he’s at least got a plan to do something fairly original for a Western–he’s planning to set it in the South.  During slavery.  Check out what he had to say on this score:

“I’d like to do a Western. But rather than set it in Texas, have it in slavery times. With that subject that everybody is afraid to deal with. Let’s shine that light on ourselves. You could do a ponderous history lesson of slaves escaping on the Underground Railroad. Or, you could make a movie that would be exciting. Do it as an adventure. A spaghetti Western that takes place during that time. And I would call it ‘A Southern.”

So basically we’re thinking Inglourious Basterds of the Underground Railroad?  Sure, why not?  Someone wanna get Michael Clarke Duncan a baseball bat?

Okay, so that’s a bit facetious, but it might well work.  After all, Tarantino has actually had brushes with Westerns before.  Consider if you will From Dusk Till Dawn, which was basically just a Western with vampires.  And failing that, remember he was actually in Sukiyaki Western Django, which is easy to forget about unless you’ve seen it.

I’m actually kind of interested in this, even IF it’ll probably be “heavily influenced” by Peckinpah and everyone ELSE who was doing Westerns in the seventies.

I like it! I’m all for it. I hated his kill bill and grindhouse movies but I loved inglorious bastards.
I’d like to see more of his western style “underdogs fight back” movies..

Can't wait to see what's up next for QT… I LOVE ALL his movies!! He can't get them done quick enough for this fan!! Now…. wonder what a Coen Brothers/QT colaboration would be like… THAT would be kick ass!

It would be cool if he set the story around Dead Wood Dick, the black indian who walked around with that long whip who didn't take no shit off of anybody, but i know Quentin will do a great job anyway i can't wait.

A QT/Spike Lee collaboration is probably very unlikely as I heard from a QT interview on Howard Stern that they don’t like each other.
