Kick-Ass Comes Under Fire For Its Film Content
Based on a graphic novel about young people who dared to become costumed crimefighters, this superhero flick is due to hit theaters next month. However, some questionable content in the film has raised the ire of several parents’ groups who now protest the movie’s upcoming release. Names for these parents’ groups have not been given at this time. However, the parents are upset because of violent scenes in which two children who become superheroes in Kick-Ass are beaten up by criminals in the film.
Meanwhile, the film’s producers are unashamedly using many violent scenes from the film’s content to promote it. This week, director Matthew Vaughn was at the South by Southwest media convention in Austin, TX. Vaughn reported that actor Mark Strong, who plays the film’s main bad guy, was repulsed by a scene in which his character ruthlessly fights one of the hero characters. The character who was beaten up in that scene was Hit Girl, who is played by 11-year-old Chloe Moretz. Matt Vaughn made a statement to CinemaBlend.com, saying that he wanted Mark Strong to stomp Hit Girl on the head with his foot and kick her around the room but he won’t do it. Strong said that he felt uncomfortable about the idea of doing such an act on screen.
However, parents’ groups aren’t the only people with serious complains about the film content of Kick-Ass. Die-hard fans of the graphic novel are also upset about the film as its story could be deviating from the source material that the movie is based on. Nevertheless, this superhero film will have an audience despite all the controversy. The movie genre for superheroes still has a committed fan base.
