Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire DVD Review–Score Another One For the BBC

March 28th, 2010 in Adventure, Comedy, DVD, Reviews -

krod mandoonYou might have seen it on Comedy Central–they are, after all, the ones who sent me my copy–or possibly on the BBC, but wherever you’ve seen it, or even if you haven’t, you’re probably going to enjoy Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire.  I sure did.

Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire follows the title character, the son of a blacksmith and a stay at home mother, as he and his unlikely band of adventurers (a mage who doesn’t have much in the way of magic, a oddly troll-like Grobbler servant, a lusty nymphomaniacal pagan warrioress, and the gay lover of Krod’s mentor) as they seek to overthrow the corrupt Chancellor Dongalor and the reign of the evil Emperor Xanus, a pun which will be flogged, dead-horse-style, for hours.

Yes, Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire is, at its roots, little more than an absurdist Robin Hood, taking all the basic conventions and shattering them.  The plot is actually fairly deep and complex, as befits an action epic like this one.  But by like token, this is also a wildly absurdist comic gem.

I could list fully dozens of moments that made me laugh, but there was a lot more to this than the sheer hilarity of it all.    There were some incredible plot twists involved with this that just made my jaw drop.  This is a lot more complex than anyone was probably expecting out of some low-rent cable series.

Thus, the Screenhead Ten Scale gives Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire a seven out of ten for being a rollicking, action packed romp that will have plenty of surprises in it.  And that fact alone may well be the biggest surprise of the whole affair.
