Noah Baumbach to (Re)Write Heist Movie?

On March 10th, 2010

Just when you thought the current rumours that The Office‘s John Krasinski is to star as the new Captain America were bizarre enough, along comes news of another odd pairing. If you don’t know who Noah Baumbach, he’s the director of quirky indie dramedies like Margot at the Wedding and the quite brilliant The Squid and the Whale, not to mention the upcoming Greenberg starring Ben Stiller. Baumbach aso co-wrote a few of Wes Anderson’s idiosyncratic flicks. And now Baumbach is set to work on a Heist movie.

The untitled movie has long been in development. Concerning a bunch of working class men who aim to rob a high-rise’s penthouse, it initially was going to star Eddie Murphy, and also got re-written by the Ocean’s 11 scribe. Plus, Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, X-Men 3) has been attached to direct for quite some time. Which makes all the stranger why Baumbach is involved. His movies primarily deal with the (often embarrassing) nuances of middle-class, pretentious,  dysfunctional families. So why is the maker of “personal” indie comedies working on what seems to be a generic heist movie? Is it to make a few bucks as a hack in light of the poor box-office performance of Margot? Or is Baumbach done with his naval-gazing origins? Either way, it seems like a mix as awkward as a family gathering in one of Baumbach’s films.
