Spike Jonze “I’m Here” short film available to view online

March 19th, 2010 in Directors -

Spike Jonze, who last gave us the Where the Wild Things Are adaptation, has released a 30-minute short film to the Internet.

The film, “I’m Here”, was first released at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. It is a story about a robot named Sheldon who meets a free-spirited robot named Francesca. From there, it is your typical robot romance and Jonze’s interesting style.

This film is available for virtual screening on the site here. Unfortunately, they seem to be only able to screen 5,000 people a day, and I couldn’t get on as “The Theater is Full”. Perhaps you’ll have better results.

The problem I have with this short is that there is no change in the protagonist. There is no transformation, and no character arc. Ultimately it is a simple, and predictable, portrait of a situation, beautifully and sensitively rendered, with a ‘neat’ device, but one-dimensional non-the-less. I think this is the reason why it is not as emotive as it might have been.
