Darren Aronofsky and Rachel Weisz Attached to Jackie K Film
Already having earned an Oscar for her supporting role in The Constant Gardener, Rachel Weisz seems determined to win more awards, maybe even Best Actress as the supposedly prestigious Academy Awards. Not only has she been receiving acclaim for her performance as Greek scholar Hypatia in the upcoming Agora, but now it seems she has signed on to play Jackie Kennedy in a planned biopic.
The film, provisionally titled Jackie, concerns John F Kennedy’s wife, particularly her reaction to his assassination and those four famous days when the entire US was in mourning. In that time Jackie was adored even more by the public, refusing to remove her blood-stained dress and leading the funeral procession on foot.
But what’s strange about the project is that Weisz’s husband Darren Aronofsky is lined up do direct and produce. Aronosfky is more well-known for visceral films like Pi and Requiem for a Dream. And while his last film, The Wrestler, showing Aronofsky focusing on performance as opposed to dazzling visuals, a real-life drama about a mourning First Lady is a world apart from his previous material. It actually sounds disappointing to see Aronofsky sign up (having bought the script), considering the potential lack of depth such a project could have. Perhaps Aronofsky just wants to work with his wife for once, or maybe like with The Wrestler, he known exactly what to do to make the movie a dramatic success.
