Alexandre Aja’s Next Target: Anime Space Pirates
It’s not every day I get to bust out the phrase “anime space pirates” in conversation, but this is one of those days.
Piranha 3D’s own Alexandre Aja has a bit of a problem–when you’ve brought out a remake of a movie involving carnivorous fish, it’s not exactly easy to follow it up. But he’s got a pretty good chance of making a suitable followup via the live-action adaptation of Cobra: The Space Pirates.
It started out as a manga (Japanese comic book) that was adapted into an animated series that was huge in Western Europe. Now, Aja’s bought the rights and is frantically hunting up investors sufficient to get Cobra off the ground and into the starlanes.
Aja’s been longing to do this project since his childhood–he was apparently a big Cobra fan back in the day; he describes a typical day as “finish school, run home, switch on the TV”. I think most of us have been there with our own particular shows–you can probably fill in the blanks with your own.
In fact, I’m opening up the floor. Hit the comments section and tell us what cartoon got you running home back in the day! Me, I looked forward to a good round of Samurai Pizza Cats back when I was in school.
