Admittedly, most folks over here are laughing at Avatar: The Last Airbender too, but for totally different reasons.  Here, you see, we hate what Shyamalan et al has done to a property that most of us enjoyed, thus we laugh derisively at this his newest huge embarrassing failure.

But over in England, where Avatar: The Last Airbender just opened, they’re laughing for a different reason.

See, over there, “across the pond” as they like to say…”bender” is slang for “homosexual”.

So you can just about imagine how British audiences reacted to scenes like “I could tell at once you’d become a bender, and that you would realize your destiny” or “There are some really powerful benders in the Northern Water Zone”.

And the kicker?  Dev Patel, one of the leads, is British himself.  He KNEW that this was the case, but didn’t mention it to Shyamalan because the word was “too integral to the movie”!  Of course, had Shyamalan paid attention to the SOURCE MATERIAL, he would’ve realized that no one’s really called “benders” in the cartoon.  They bend, or they perform bending, but they’re usually called “airbenders” or “firebenders”, according to their element of choice.

And all this after Shyamalan talked up his “European sensibilities”.  Nicely done, M. Night…what WILL you bungle next?
