He’s Your Dog, Charlie Brown DVD Review–Short But Sweet

October 5th, 2010 in Animation, Classic, Comedy, DVD, Reviews -

The folks out at Warner Brothers sent me a copy of He’s Your Dog, Charlie Brown to review, and as is generally the case, it’s about impossible to ever knock the Peanuts gang on quality. In fact, about the only thing you can knock them on is value. More on that in a minute.

He’s Your Dog, Charlie Brown is a two-episode collection of one of the greatest American animated institutions of all time, Peanuts. This time, we get the titular episode, He’s Your Dog, Charlie Brown (the story of how Snoopy annoys virtually everybody in the Peanuts gang with his rambunctious antics and wild imagination, is sent back to his home, the Daisy Hill Puppy Farm, for a refresher course in manners only to get sidetracked by an extended stay at Peppermint Patty’s house. He later discovers that life at Peppermint Patty’s isn’t the wild party you might think it is.) and a supplement, Life’s A Circus, Charlie Brown (the story of Snoopy going to a recently-opened circus, becoming enamored with the lead in a poodle act, joining up with the circus, only to discover that life on the road isn’t for him after a drastic measure involving pink food coloring).

There’s no denying that there are plenty of laughs and heart-warming moments, not to mention a few good lessons for the kiddies, who will no doubt love the Peanuts gang about as much as you did growing up and in all probability about as much as your parents did when THEY were growing up (the Peanuts gang is celebrating its sixtieth anniversary, you know).

And while it’s not necessarily the best of values–you only get two episodes here–it’s still a good show. You certainly can’t deny the appeal.  They’re good episodes, though it’s disappointing that there are only two on the DVD.

Thus, the Screenhead Ten Scale gives He’s Your Dog, Charlie Brown a six out of ten for putting on a good quality show, just not very much of it.  A vastly better rental than a buy, it’ll still make you laugh, warm your heart, and share a touchstone experience with a whole new generation.
