The Goonies 25th Anniversary Collector’s Edition Movie Review–As Good Now As It Was Then

On November 2nd, 2010

The folks out at Warner Brothers sent me something downright spectacular, folks…seriously, when I got my hands on this monster my jaw quite literally dropped. They sent me a copy of The Goonies’ 25th Anniversary Collector’s Edition, and it’s astonishing.

Naturally, of course, we have to start with a review of The Goonies proper, and as anyone who actually remembers life before the Internet probably already knows, The Goonies was what pretty much every kid wanted to be part of, a group of outcast friends whose families were finding themselves about to be foreclosed on. And as this group of fond friends were about to find themselves forcibly separated, they decided to set off on one final grand adventure–to find One Eyed Willy’s lost pirate treasure and hopefully pull up enough cash to save their homes.

It’s a little extra poignant given the state of economic affairs today, and might well lead some impressionable kids to try their own Goonie adventure in a bid to save their home from foreclosure, but still, it’s as exciting and funny and cleverly done as it was when it first emerged twenty five years ago. It’s downright unsettling how well this has aged, in all honesty–it might well have been made last year. It’s got a timeless quality to it that amazes and even frightens just a bit. It’s twenty five years old. I was just a KID when this hit, but even I remember it from long, long back in the day. Sean Astin got his start here, for crying out loud. We all know Corey Feldman to this day.

The point of the matter here, of course, is that you’re almost certain to enjoy this. Whether you simply remember your own childhood Goonie adventures or you want to have a whole new set (or even if you’re at the point where you want to share your Goonie adventures with your own kids), then this is the place to have them.

And the 25th Anniversary Collection provides a whole lot more than just the movie, too–you’ll get magazine reprints (one from Empire Magazine and an actual souvenir magazine from 1985), ten storyboard cards, and, of all things, an actual Goonies board game.

So if you want a complete Goonies experience, then you’ll definitely want to get your hands on a copy of the 25th Anniversary Edition, and the Screenhead Ten Scale responds accordingly with a ten out of ten. Sheer value coupled together with a movie that looks just as fresh today as it did when it showed up all those years ago means that this package is a definite must-have.
