Damon and Copley for Blomkamp’s ‘Elysium’

Last year audiences were blown away by what turned out to be a pleasant surprise. South African sci-fi action flick District 9 was far superior and far cheaper than most Hollywood blockbusters from the past few years, showing that a bit of ingenuity can go a long way. Director Neil Blomkamp has been attached to a lot of films, from a District 9 sequel to The Hobbit. But now casting rumours have suggested that his next film is entitled Elysium.

According to Deadline, Matt Damon is in talks to star in the film. Damon hasn’t had a major hit since The Bourne Ultimatum, so it makes sense he’s aligning himself with a promising director with big ambitions. There’s virtually nothing available about the plot of Elysium. The only rumour flying around is that it takes place on another planet, but who knows if that’s true since the makers are keeping quiet.

But one can’t help but suspect that Elysium is just a codename for District 9 Part 2. Surely Blomkamp is under pressure to make the sequel. Plus, Sharlto Copley, who brilliantly played the protagonist in District 9, has also signed up to Elysium. This recent viral video that Blomkamp made for Wired magazine doesn’t help either opinion.
