Bizarre Foods With Andrew Zimmern Collection Four Part Two DVD Review–Bizarre Is Not The Word

February 8th, 2011 in Documentary, DVD, Reviews -

If you ever wanted to get up close and personal to a man who eats food that you would probably throw away, then you’ll definitely want to check out Andrew Zimmern and Bizarre Foods. And Bizarre Foods With Andrew Zimmern: Collection Four Part Two, which the folks out at the Travel Channel by way of their press agent Gaiam sent out for me to review, gives you an amazing look at food you’ve never even imagined…or wanted to.

Bizarre Foods With Andrew Zimmern: Collection Four Part Two takes us all over the world, from South Korea to Texas and beyond, to show us what people eat all over. And some of the things people eat are downright, well, bizarre. Frankly, bizarre is not the case in some examples–I watched this wackadoo eat octopus tentacles that were still moving. I saw him graze his way through a seafood market, and he was not stopping to cook a single thing. But then, I saw him eat a soup made from the bones, guts, and leftover parts of a fish he’d picked up earlier, and discovered that that’s how you traditionally end a meal in South Korea–with soup.

And make no mistake, you will learn. You will learn like no tomorrow. You’ll learn that it’s actually possible to eat rotten skate–a kind of stingray–because bacteria that could kill you are themselves killed by other bacteria that in turn won’t kill people.

If a good cooking show is called “food porn”, then you can call this one a “food snuff film”. Andrew Zimmern will eat the most horrible, outlandish things, and describe them just like food porn might, but then you’ve got to remember that the man is actually talking about stewed cow udders or even red ant larvae.

It’s enlightening and yet awkward at the same time, discovering what all people eat all over the world, and it’ll be an education unlike any you’ve had recently. The only downside is that that’s all it is. It’s going to be a non-stop litany of weird foods, one dish after another, and most with a bit of description included. I don’t recommend you watch this while eating dinner–it could easily put you off your lunch the next day–but it’s definitely enlightening, and fun to watch besides.

The Screenhead Ten Scale gives Bizarre Foods With Andrew Zimmern Collection Four Part Two an eight out of ten for being very much a niche item, but not without plenty of appeal. It’s fun to watch but it’s also deeply educational, even if you may not want to learn some of what it’s teaching. It’s a great one from the Travel Channel, and well worth watching.
