I have three lucky winners for the Neil Young Music Box giveaway!

Vicki Dahlstrom won and she says, “I love Neil Young. I didn’t get to see him when he came to town. The tickets were just too
expensive. So, maybe, if I win, I would get to listen to him at home.”

Yup Vicki. You get to listen to him at home!

Kathy Emerick is our next winner, and she says, “OH.. brings back a lot of memories of Neil Young and the group Crosby, Still and Nash and Young. Wow I would love this.”

Our final winner is Nora Scott-Platt, who sums it up nicely, “I think I have grown old with Neil Young.”

You and me both!

Despite remaining a hugely original singer, songwriter, performer and, let’s face it, human being, across a career spanning almost fifty years, Neil Young has never been immune to the influence of others. This will be of no surprise to anyone with even a hint of interest in the man and his music, but only those who have studied their subject in depth will be aware of the enormous range of artists and genres Neil has both been affected by and drawn inspiration from, much of which, if one knows where to look, is apparent in Young’s incredible catalogue.

This film traces the astonishing musical journey of Neil Young from the day he first heard Elvis to his most recent offerings, via numerous talented artists who assisted in his creation of, arguably, the finest body of work to emerge during the rock era.

Extra features include extended interviews, digital biographies, beyond DVD and more.

This is raunchy, but it is funny. Lady Gaga is pure talent. I never looked at a “3-Way” this way before.

DreamWorks sent me an update on Steven Spielberg’s War Horse. I am very excited about this movie, which is based on the book by Michael Morpurgo and a recent stage play by Nick Stafford. The movie script was co-written by Lee Hall and Richard Curtis. The cast includes Emily Watson, David Thewlis, Peter Mullan, Niels Arestrup, Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irvine, Benedict Cumberbatch and Toby Kebbell.

War Horse is set against a sweeping canvas of rural England and Europe during the First World War. The movie begins with the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert, who tames and trains him. The story is an epic adventure for audiences of all ages. My daughter will love it.

When they are forcefully separated, the film follows the extraordinary journey of the horse as he moves through the war, changing and inspiring the lives of those he meets—British cavalry, German soldiers, and a French farmer and his granddaughter—before the story reaches its emotional climax in the heart of No Man’s Land.

I look forward to more images from the movie like the poster and trailer, which I will post here.

The movie opens December 28, 2011.

Now that the Governator has been relinguished of his duties, it’s time for Arnold Schwarzenegger to get back to what he’s good at: trying badly to act. Does he even change his facial expression throughout the entirety of Commando? While no one cared in 1985, Arnie seems a little obsolete these days. Which is why he is making two huge missteps.

The first is that Arnie is set to return as the iconic Terminator. He appeared in the first three movies, his likeness turned up in Terminator: Salvation, and now according to 24 Frames his agents are shopping around a package for a fifth film that would include the king of meatheads. Extending a franchise beyond its welcome is nothing new in Hollywood, but what’s even more depressing is that it’s not being handed to some new talent to revitalise the spent story. No, instead Justin Lin is attached as director. Yes, the man between the moronic The Fast and the Furious sequels 3-5, the fifth (written by a 5-year old, it seems) due out this week. It will without doubt make a lot of money, and sadly that qualifies a hack director to take on what was once a great duo of films. Let’s just say there’s not much hope for the Terminated and the Untardy.

His other project is to appear as a comic-book superhero known as the Governator, developed as a comic and animated series by Marvel maestro Stan Lee. When the subject of a jokes gets in on it, you know it’s not going to be funny. Nor is it clever to develop a nickname into an entire series. Maybe Arnie does belong in politics after all.

For an actor who is known to be abrasive and driven at the same time, it’s about time that he tries to take over an entire film production by being its actor and director. According to Deadline, Russell Crowe is considering taking control of a film entitled 77.

While he hasn’t committed just yet (he’s waiting on the next draft), Crowe is line to take on a script that is an original idea by pulp writer James Ellroy (he wrote the original novels of LA Confidential and The Black Dahlia). David Matthews is working on the redraft. The story follows two police officers, one black and one white, and the connection between an unsolved murder of a police officer and the infamous shoot-out between the LAPD and the militant Patty Heart-kidnapping Symbionese Liberation Army.

Crowe’s superstar status has lagged a bit in recent years (Robin Hood underperformed, and The Next Three Days and State of Play were borderline disasters) so perhaps he feels he needs to resurrect his carrer single-handedly. Apparently, Crowe was interested in directing WWII drama The Long Green Shore but ultimately backed down, and the project is still in development.

For the last few years we’ve experienced a powerhouse of superheroes with even more coming this year such as Thor, X-Men: First Class, Captain America and Green Lantern.

Their arrivals couldn’t be more perfectly timed. Warner Home Video is celebrating the year of the superhero with the June 7, 2011 release of Superman: The Motion Picture Anthology (1978-2006) on Blu-ray. The Blu-ray collection contains all four original theatrical Superman films starring Christopher Reeve Superman Returns, and the two alternate versions of Superman I and Superman II.

You can check out the trailer, which seems more like a commercial, but it does bring back memories such as Marlon Brando as the original father of Superman (Jor-El) and Gene Hackman as Luthor. We can’t forget Glen Ford, Jackie Cooper and Ned Beatty.

Another interesting treat to the anthology are the Donner Cuts of Superman II. Nearly thirty years later, we can view Richard Donner’s footage that didn’t make it to the movie. Richard Donner had become the first director in history to be able to complete a film he left during production with nearly all his footage “in the can.” Adding back a substantial amount of that unused footage, the director has seen his original vision restored and brought to fruition.

Most notably, the “Donner cut” restores the Marlon Brando role, filmed for, but not included in the final theatrical release version of Superman II. The legendary Brando’s performance as Jor-El has finally been restored in key scenes that amplify the Superman lore and deepen the profound relationship between father and son.

With so many other changes, large and small, including a variety of Lois Lane (Margot Kidder) schemes to unmask Clark Kent as Superman, this Superman II proved to be an eye-opening experience and an important addition to film history.
