Screenhead.com -- the alternative movie blog.

Is anything ever leaked these days, or are they actually released by studios in order to generate excitement and buzz. That was apparently the idea behind the leak of American Gangster one week before its wide release in the US. And joining the conspiracy is this leak of David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The fact that it has been around for over a day and hasn’t been taken off the Google Inc-owned Youtube speaks volumes.

Nevertheless, it gives us a glimpse into one of the most anticipated films of the year. How people could have enjoyed the rather muddled and ultimately over-rated original movie is beyond me. That said, Fincher seems to be taking the right track with changes to the script (such as not making the trilogy’s hero, Lisbeth, a sidekick in the first film’s central plot). The trailer is a slick, music video-like clip complete with dominant song (Nine Inch Nails and Karen O covering Led Zepp’s Immigrant Song). However, it’s persistant cutting to the song’s beat makes it repetitive and fails to draw you into the story, and the music choice is a little tongue-in-cheek for the tone the story is trying to achieve.

Some claim Fincher is on a high at the moment, with the critically acclaimed The Social Network and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, but if you can buy the glib and superficiality of those two movies, perhaps this will be to your taste. Then again, perhaps this may be a return to Fincher’s best work, such as Zodiac and Seven.

Dustin Hoffman and Susan George starred in the original Straw Dogs, which was directed by Sam Peckinpah (The Wild Bunch). That was in 1971 when movies like Straw Dogs was unheard of, but today, I will use the old cliche, they are a dime a dozen. Honestly, I don’t feel anything special about this remake.  If you read the logline, it’s practically word for word except for the locations of where each movie takes place. The original took place in rural England while the remake takes place in the deep South.

The remake stars James Marsden, Kate Bosworth and Alexander Skarsgard, which is directed by Rod Lurie. The trailer looks great, and I am sure the movie is just as good as the first one. It’s just that I am not a fan of remakes. Let’s have originality!

Directed by Steven Spielberg from producer Peter Jackson The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn trailer finally arrives. The movie stars Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, Daniel Craig, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Gad Elmaleh, Toby Jones and Mackenzie Crook.

Written by Edgar Wright, Steven Moffat and Joe Cornish the movie is in 3D Motion Capture Film. Jamie Bell as Tintin is the intrepid young reporter whose relentless pursuit of a good story thrusts him into a world of high adventure with Daniel Craig as the nefarious Red Rackham.

The movie opens in theaters on December 23, 2011

More Fright Night (2011) Videos

You are looking at the trailer of Craig Gillespie-helmed revamp comedy-horror classic. Senior Charlie Brewster (Anton Yelchin) finally has it all—he’s running with the popular crowd and dating the hottest girl in high school. In fact, he’s so cool he’s even dissing his best friend Ed (Christopher Mintz-Plasse).

But trouble arrives when an intriguing stranger Jerry (Colin Farrell) moves in next door. He seems like a great guy at first, but there’s something not quite right—and everyone, including Charlie’s mom (Toni Collette), doesn’t notice. After witnessing some very unusual activity, Charlie comes to an unmistakable conclusion: Jerry is a vampire preying on his neighborhood. Unable to convince anyone that he’s telling the truth, Charlie has to find a way to get rid of the monster himself.

Colin Farrell looks ripped in this trailer. I can hardly recognize Toni Collette. All in all, it should be a fun movie to watch with your friends.

The movie opens in theaters August 19, 2011 and it’s not rated yet.

Real Steel is directed by Shawn Levy. Levy directed two movies that I adore, Night at the Museum franchise and Date Night. Real Steel is an action drama about a former boxer (Hugh Jackman) who, against all odds, gets one last shot at a comeback when he teams up with his estranged son (Dakota Goyo) to build and train the perfect contender for the new high-tech sport of robot boxing.

No offense, but It appears that the story is The Champ gone robot. The Champ was produced twice. The first one was directed by King Vidor, starring Wallace Berry and Jackie Cooper. Decades later, Jon Voight and Rick Schroder starred in Franco Zeffirelli’s movie.

Screenplay by John Gatins, Reel Steel is a gritty, white-knuckle, action ride set in the near-future where the sport of boxing has gone high-tech, Real Steel follows Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback. Evangeline Lilly, Anthony Mackie and Kevin Durand also star in Reel Steel.

The movie opens in theaters October 7, 2011.

Attention movie buffs! Lindsay is the winner of Peter Weir’s The Way Back starring Colin Farrell, Ed Harris and Jim Sturgess. Linday says, “Colin Farrell is a hottie!”  I am inclined to agree with her and he is very good in this film. He plays a criminal among political prisioners.

If you didn’t win The Way Back, no problem because the movie is available at your neighborhood redbox kiosk for only $1 a night.

Weir is a phenomenal director of such films as Master and Commander, Witness, The Year of Living Dangerously and The Truman Show.

I am excited to share the new trailer from The Devil’s Double, opening in theaters July 29, 2011.

Featuring a riveting double performance by Dominic Cooper, who was awesome in An Education and Mama Mia, in the roles of Latif Yahia and Uday Hussein, The Devil’s Double is a dynamic, chilling adaptation of Latif Yahia’s autobiographical novel, charting one man’s defiant struggle to survive a viper’s pit of corruption and brutality. The film is directed by Lee Tamahori and written by Michael Thomas.

Summoned from the frontline to Saddam Hussein’s palace, Iraqi army lieutenant Latif is thrust into the highest echelons of the “royal family” when he’s ordered to become the ‘fiday’ – or body double – to Saddam’s son, the notorious “Black Prince” Uday Hussein, a reckless, sadistic party-boy with a rabid hunger for sex and brutality. With his and his family’s lives at stake, Latif must surrender his former self forever as he learns to walk, talk and act like Uday.

But nothing could have prepared him for the horror of the Black Prince’s psychotic, drug-addled life of fast cars, easy women and impulsive violence. With one wrong move costing him his life, Latif forges an intimate bond with Sarrab (Ludivine Sangier), Uday’s seductive mistress who’s haunted by her own secrets. But as war looms with Kuwait and Uday’s depraved gangster regime threatens to destroy them all, Latif realizes that escape from the devil’s den will only come at the highest possible cost.

Taylor Lautner in Abduction looks pretty darn good, but I am concerned about lines like “Suddenly, everyone around me is dying!”

I must admit the trailer is entertaining, and from watching the trailer I want to see the movie now. Lautner looks good in an action movie. He reminds me of a younger Tom Cruise, but more naïve and vulnerable.

When I see him kick a window out or make love to a young woman on a train, I say “Yea!” This guy looks good. But, I would also like to call Abduction a fantasy movie because where in the world will something like this every happen. Definitely this could not happen in the real world but only in the imaginations of the writer and director.

John Singleton directs Abduction, and, perhaps, that is the movie’s saving grace, not to mention, Sigourney Weaver, Alfred Molina and Maria Bello. Shawn Christensen wrote the script and is fairly new to the screenwriting world. I truly hope the movie does well because the trailer looks great, fun to watch.

The movie opens in theaters September 23, 2011.
