Bing-Crosby-Television-Specials-V1-DVDOne of America’s most beloved entertainers shines on the small screen in a series of song- and star-studded specials in Bing Crosby: The Television Specials, Volume One, crooning on DVD May 25.

Included in this premiere, two-disc collection are Bing’s debut special from January 1954, featuring Jack Benny; the landmark September 1959 show for Oldsmobile, with legends Peggy Lee, Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong; the May 1962 special, with long-time Road comedies co-star Bob Hope, Edie Adams, son Gary Crosby and the Smothers Brothers; and the April 1970 show, Cooling It, with Dean Martin, Bernadette Peters and Flip Wilson.

theRoad

The best-selling and Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Road, is now a movie. An all-star cast is featured in this epic post-apocalyptic tale of the survival of a father and his young son as they journey across a barren America that was destroyed by a mysterious cataclysm.

A masterpiece adventure of a future in which men are pushed to the worst and the best that they are capable of becoming, and a father and his son are sustained by love.

The Road is not the most upbeat story, but it has some dynamite actors such as Robert Duvall, Viggo Mortensen and Charlie Theron. The movie captures how bleak and hopeless it all feels.  But many feel the film should be seen despite its depressing theme.

The Road Blu-Ray and Standard DVD drops on the streets May 25, 2010.

Screenhead is sponsoring a giveaway of The Road. To enter the giveaway, post your name and we will pick the winner June 18, 2010.

Photo #3 CreditJamesOMarasmallScreenhead has a copy of The Carole King and James Taylor: Live at the Troubadour for a giveaway.

I listened to the CD, and the familiar tunes brought back pleasant memories of when I listened to my sister’s albums as girl in grade school. I had no idea who these two performers were at the time, but I knew I liked their music. King and Taylor toured together in the early seventies for two years.  They always remained close friends and talked of performing together, again.

Live at the Troubadour was recorded in 2007 when James Taylor, Carole King and members of their original band (Danny Kortchmar, Leland Sklar and Russell Kunkel) returned to the Troubadour in LA to celebrate the venue’s 50th anniversary.  This now legendary reunion was the inspiration for Carole and James’ current and highly successful “Troubadour Reunion” summer tour.

The CD/DVD set is available now and debuted at #4 on Billboard’s Top 200!  The release has sold over 77,000 units in the first week, including an impressive #1 Internet debut.

The album contains familiar hits including “Carolina on My Mind,” “Something in the Way She Moves,” “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” “Fire and Rain,” “Up On the Roof” and “I Feel the Earth Move.”

The DVD has the legendary performers sharing anecdotes about their hits songs. Taylor refers to “Something in the Way She Moves” as the song that opened the door to his first recording contract with Apple Records (owned by Paul McCartney and John Lennon).

You can even see the duo perform together on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on May 18, 2010.  PBS will additionally air Live at the Troubadour nationally beginning in June.

To try and win The Carole King and James Taylor: Live at the Troubadour CD/DVD post your name and we will pick the winner June 5, 2010.

You can take a listen:

Laser is an everyday word that actually stands for an acronym: Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. The popular technology was invented fifty years ago this month.

You might remember the laser taking a foothold as a powerful beam weapon in Hollywood movies. The classic 1964 movie Goldfinger placed James Bond in harm’s way. He nearly gets burned below his belt by the laser beam.

Aside from Hollywood’s take on the laser, it is used to mend rather than to tear apart body parts. Today, the laser is most commonly used for repairing torn retinas, tweaking corneas or eliminating cancerous tumors.

We mustn’t forget its reliably for reading off the messages contained in DVDs and CDs.

Judy Garland Volume 3 Box Art (2-D)I’m certain you’ve heard the sad news that legendary, multi-Grammy Award-winning songstress Lena Horne passed away this past weekend.

The enchanting jazz singer and actress was best known for her plaintive, signature song “Stormy Weather” and for her triumph over bigotry that allowed her to entertain white audiences (but not socialize with them).  She was also one of the first black performers hired to sing with a major white band, to play the Copacabana nightclub in New York City and, when she signed with MGM, was among a handful of black actors to have a contract with a major Hollywood studio.

Horne also delighted fans when she appeared on The Judy Garland Show in 1963, performing “I Want to Be Happy,” “Where is Love?” and “He Loves Me,” as well as a delightful medley of classics with Garland.

This treasured episode is featured in The Judy Garland Show: Volume Three, recently released on DVD as part of a special, 13-volume collector’s set being released by Infinity Entertainment Group (Volumes 1, 2 and 4 are also available now).

Screenhead held a giveaway for The Judy Garland Show: Volume Three and happily announced its winners.

We are holding another giveaway of the DVD in remembrance of the great songstress Lena Horne.  Simply post your name and you might win a copy of The Judy Garland Show: Volume Three. The winner will be picked June 9, 2010.
