Well I’ll be…folks, this is a day I never thought would come to pass. I’ve been writing, off and on, about Kevin Smith’s abortive film Red State pretty much ever since I started blogging and first heard about it back in 2007. But the word came down from Smith himself about a mysterious two am phone call in which he actually got the money to shoot the unusual horror film about religious fundamentalism gone murderously awry.
The political climate may have…shifted…somewhat since Red State’s first inception, but a Kevin Smith horror movie may be interesting to say the least. But here’s the down side, kids–Smith may have the money now…but he may not have the time. He’s currently working on A Couple of Dicks, a buddy cop movie featuring Tracy Morgan and Bruce Willis, which is actually his first ever studio film. Plus, he’s desperately longing to make a hockey movie (not surprising given Clerks and Mallrats, which both featured hockey scenes) around Warren Zevon’s song Hit Somebody.
But either way, if Smith wants to do Red State, Red State shall be done because he’s finally got the cash to do the job.
