Oscars In And Out burgers
We’re not sure whom those Oscar statuettes belong to, but we can say that we certainly understand that they’d rather go for In-And-Out, the de-facto most awesome burger joint in California, rather than some snazzy, over-engineered dinner party.

The Oscars are a week away and it will be an interesting show with James Franco and Anne Hathaway co-hosting. The quick cuts show very little of what to expect next Sunday, and I have seen Franco more animated. He’s doing is James Dean guise and Hathaway is as bubbly and sparkly as ever.

This clip from Saturday Night Live needs no introduction. However, I am compelled to see the movie Winter’s Bone and re-think Andy and Woody’s relationship in Toy Story 3.

It’s good to see you working, again, Dana!

I missed the Academy Tweet feed, but I am grateful to In Contention’s announcement that Best Song performances are back for 83rd Oscars! Gwyneth Paltrow is set to sing!

This is fantastic. I missed the Best Song performances last year. I thought, it was a very bad move by the Academy to scratch them last year.

With that behind us, it’s exciting to have someone like Gwyneth Paltrow perform on the Oscar show (as she did on the CMT awards), which will help the ratings. In addition, Mandy Moore will be performing “I See the Light” with Zachary Levi and Alan Menken. A.R. Rahman will do “If I Rise” with Florence + the Machine and Randy Newman will be there to belt out “We Belong Together.”

I am looking forward to all the Best Song performances.

Tron: Legacy made it to the next round of competition for VFX at the Oscars. After watching this reel, it is obvious Digital Domain deserves the recognition, backed by the fact that the Disney movie has made $245 million so far.

Directed by first-timer Joseph Kosinski, the screenplay was co-written by Adam Horowitz (Lost), Richard Jefferies (Blood Tide, Living Hell), Edward Kitsis (Lost) and the director of the original movie, Steven Lisberger.

With that said, I get ecstatic about presentations of behind-the-scenes film making. Particularly a reel like this one from Digital Domain is priceless.  I am so impressed with the digital quality of the work.  Unbeknownst, Jeff Bridges was practically in every scene.  I thought he was just sitting on a cushion not wanting to play the game throughout the filming process.

Be warned if you haven’t seen the movie yet, lots of spoilers!  You view the digital effects from beginning to the end of the movie, a wonderful treat for anyone interested in filmmaking.

The last film for 2010 is Peter Weir’s The Way Back? According to Deadline and the Academy of Motion Pictures, the Screener for Oscar contender was the last one mailed to the members of the Academy as well as the Guild and DGA.

The film portrays the harrowing journey set in the 1940 of a group of prisoners who escape a Soviet gulag to travel across five hostile countries in search of freedom.

If you want to see The Way Back in a movie theater this week, you will have to journey to West Covina, on the outer reaches of LA County.  Weir’s movie is playing there for the one-week Academy qualifying run.

It’s an interesting place, I am being kind, to unveil the filmmaker’s first movie in 7 years. With 6 Oscar nominations and a grand list of movies such as Witness, The Truman Show, Dead Poet’s Society, Mosquito Coast, The Year of Living Dangerously and Master and Commander among others, it compels me to highlight The Way Back and the Award making process.

Roger Ebert praises this short film and he thinks it should be nominated for an Oscar.  You decide. Jamie Stuart is talented – that’s for sure - and I recommend that you take a look at Stuart’s site: The Mutiny Company.  Wonderful use of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’s “Painted Sun in Abstract”  from The Social Network, I must say!
